History

The Critical Issues Symposium was the idea of former president of Hope College, Dr. Gordon Van Wylen, who appointed a committee that sponsored the first Critical Issues Symposium in March 1980. The Symposium has been designed to stimulate serious thinking about current issues, and to provide a forum in which the Holland community, students, and faculty may be informed by and dialogue with experts.
Each year the president of the college appoints a Critical Issues Symposium Committee, which, after consultation with students, faculty, and staff, selects the topic for the next symposium. Past topics have included the Middle East, world hunger, the family, energy, civil rights, Christian voices, the environment, sports and American life, and science and its place.

Scope and Content

The records of the Critical Issues Symposium not only give insight into the efforts of the CIS Committee to bring a wide variety of speakers to the Hope College campus, but also include background information on many topics and ideas which shaped the society in which Hope students lived.
The records have been divided into two main series: a topical file and speakers. The topical file contains information about the CIS committee (minutes, correspondence, memoranda) and the individual symposiums (publicity, questionnaire responses, and symposium schedules). The material is arranged alphabetically by topic heading.
The speakers series contains correspondence, background information, and photographs of nearly all the speakers asked to participate in the Critical Issues Symposium. This material is arranged chronologically by year and then alphabetically by the speaker's last name.
Additional material relating to the Critical Issues Symposium can be found in the cassette tape and videotape collections.
