1941
World War II began. The Holland office of the Netherlands Information
Service kept up on the Netherlands government in exile. Princess
Juliana received an honorary degree from Hope College.

1947
Holland celebrated its Centennial. |

|
Late 1940s
The first Hispanic migrant workers began to settle in Holland. By
1990, they made up between 15-20% of the city's population.

1952
Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard visited Holland, Michigan. |

|
1964
De Zwaan windmill was given to Holland, Michigan. It arrived from
the Netherlands and became the centerpiece of the new Windmill
Island. Prince Bernhard participated in the official dedication
on April 10, 1965. |
1970s
Holland began to see growth in the Asian population. |

1972
Princess Margriet and Mr. Peter van Vollenhoven visited Holland,
Michigan. |
1974
Interstate 196 freeway opened between Holland and Grand Rapids, enhancing
the transportation corridor in western Michigan.
1980-90s
Explosive growth throughout the Holland area. Area population nearly
doubled by the early 1990s. The area is host to many major firms
including Haworth, Herman Miller, Prince Corp, Bristol Meyers
Squibb, Padnos Iron and Metal, Nabisco-Lifesavers, and many others.
1982
Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus visit Holland/Zeeland as part of
the Netherlands-USA Bicentennial. |

1988
The Joint Archives of Holland was formed to preserve the community's
documentary heritage. It unites the archival collections of the
Holland Museum, Hope College, and Western Seminary. |
| Downtown was renovated and the first enclosed shopping
mall is opened on US 31. Numerous new retail establishments
opened around Holland, including an extensive outdoor outlet
mall.
1992
The renovated Holland Museum opened in the old post office. |

1997
Holland celebrates its Sesquicentennial with a multitude of events.
The new Van Raalte statue is dedicated in Centennial Park on May
1, 1997. |
