Spring 2002 * Volume 4 * Number 2 BUILDING A MATURE ASSESSMENT PROGRAM OR "WHAT I DID ON MY SPRING BREAK
I attended several interesting and information sessions on the assessment
of student learning at the 107th Annual Conference of the NCA Higher
Learning Commission (March 23-25). In addition, I become more familiar
(through reading conference materials and talking to colleagues at other
institutions) about the framework that NCA uses to evaluate college's
assessment plans and progress. Remember, that "true believers" in assessment
(like myself) feel that the three-step model of: 1) developing goals
for student learning, 2) evaluating whether students have achieved those
goals through assessment tools, and 3) using the information about student
learning to "loop back" into teaching and curricula should be done no
matter what, because it is sound educational practice. That NCA places
a heavy emphasis on assessment should not change the intrinsic value
of doing assessment. It is also true that NCA serves as a valuable resource
for us because they provide important models and benchmarks for knowing
how well we are doing with respect to assessment.
