Chuck Green, in one of his numerous presentations around the campus
on assessment, lists these as qualities of effective assessment:
- Benefits students directly (provides them with greater information
about their strengths and weaknesses) and indirectly (improves the
program)
- Is focused on one or two selected items
- Is embedded within the program itself for greater efficiency and
greater validity (course assignments, field placements, research
projects, etc.). Effective assessment is a component of effective
pedagogy since it:
- Utilizes existing measures
- Integrates additional measures
- Revises or replaces courses based on assessment information
- Knows when good enough is enough (balances desire for
comprehensive information with constraints on student time,
faculty time, and the budget)
- Recognizes that all news is good news
