New server room!

Today all 18 systems from the CIT Server Room were moved to a new home! Here's some pictures of the old server room:

The old room was designed over 20 years ago for the College's large VAX systems. It had a raised floor with removable panels. The idea was that all the cabling running between the servers and to the rest of campus could be "hidden" under the floor. Also, notice the two giant air conditioners (big white boxes in the back of the first picture) that used to keep the room very cold, which the VAX systems needed.

At any rate, the room was bigger than we currently need (or forecast needing in the future), and we'll soon have a couple new employees who will probably want offices (see the previous post). So we decided to take some unused space in the basement of Durfee Hall and build a smaller, more up-to-date server room:

As you can see, there's no raised floor, and all the cabling is exposed. That way it's easier to access and keep organized, and allows a lot of flexibility for adding/moving/removing systems in the future.

Thanks to Steve Bareman, Jon Brockmeier, Brad Bouwkamp, Brian Yost, and sophomore Stephen Christensen for coming in early on a Saturday morning. It took us about 5 hours to get everything moved, reconnected, and running again. On Monday, renovations begin on the old server room in the main CIT office area that in about 4 weeks will house some new offices. We'll post updates here as the project progresses.
