The Facebook

The Facebook is advertised as an online directory that connects people through social networks at schools. It's incredibly popular with college students. At one point last year, over two-thirds of all Hope students had created accounts there. The idea is that you can go there, post information about yourself, look at the information others have posted, and join groups to communicate with those of like interests. There are different sections for each college, and in general you're only able to see (and be seen by) students at your school.

HOWEVER, the following is an excerpt from the Facebook's Terms of Use:
By posting Member Content to any part of the Web site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, perform, display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such information and content and to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such information and content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing.

What this says is that anyone who uses the Facebook agrees that everything and anything they post there (even if they later delete it) can be reposted and reused at any time without permission. Although we don't know of any reason to believe that they're currently doing this, we do think that it's definitely something that everyone using the service should be aware of.

Wireless Problems, Viruses, Spyware, and Network Overflows

CIT has created a document to assist with removing viruses and spyware from your computer. These are the most common cause of wireless problems and Network Overflows, and can also result in pop-ups and very slow performance. Although we can't guarantee they will fix every problem, these steps have been proven to fix most virus and spyware problems on most computers:
Network Overflow and Virus/Spyware Repair Procedures

And remember, if you need additional assistance, you can either make an appointment to bring your computer to CIT, or take advantage of the discounted rates we've arranged with local computer repair shops.
