Welcome New Students!

The department of Computing and Information Technology (CIT) is here to help make your transition into Hope College and your use of technology as smooth as possible.

In your recent packet of information sent by the Orientation Office, we included a one-page summary of helpful tips and considerations. This handout is also available on our web site.

While it is not necessary to bring a computer to campus (we have over 400 computers in labs), more than 90% of students do. Of these, the majority of students choose a laptop running Microsoft Windows. All campus residence hall rooms have high-speed Internet connections available and wireless access is available in many other areas. A complete listing of wired and wireless availability is on our web site.

Each year, numerous students come to campus with virus- or spyware-infected computers. During the year, many more student computers are infected with viruses. Last year, more than 850 students (29% of the student body) sought help from CIT when their computers became inoperable due to these problems. Almost all of these problems could have been avoided with current virus-protection software and routine downloading of Microsoft Windows updates. Symantec Antivirus software is available to all students at no charge. The software can be downloaded from our web site or we will mail you an installation CD. Please install this software prior to your arrival on campus to avoid long waits for service at the start of the school year.

Finally, you have already received your Hope College e-mail account. This e-mail account will remain active as long as you are a Hope College student. Your Hope College e-mail account is accessible via a web browser from anywhere in the world. Please check this account daily, as it is the primary means of official communications from your professors and campus staff. Many students also have a personal e-mail account (Hotmail, Yahoo!, GMail, etc.) for non-academic communication. We feel having the Hope College e-mail account for college-related communication and a personal e-mail account for other communication is a good strategy to keep messages easily organized for later use.

We look forward to seeing you this fall!
