Students having trouble logging into Moodle

Some students are logging into Moodle only to find that they are greeted by an "Update Profile" form which will not allow them to use their @hope.edu email address. In most of these cases, the student has apparently forgotten his/her username from last year. Each of these students already has a functioning account with his/her Hope email address in it, but he/she has some alternative username. For example: bob.smith@hope.edu is tied to the username bsmith. Bob forgets that he created a bsmith account for himself last year and tries to login as bob.smith. There is no bob.smith, so Moodle creates a blank user and asks him to fill in the info. He can't use bob.smith@hope.edu as the email address because bsmith (which of course is him) already uses it.

There are a couple of solutions to this problem. The first is simply for students to remember their usernames from last year and use them. If a student can't remember his/her username, he/she can click the "Yes, help me login" button at http://courses.hope.edu/login/ and fill in the email address (not the username) with his/her @hope.edu address. The second solution is for us to find the old username and rename the account. For example: find bsmith and rename it bob.smith. The final solution we want to implement is to make everybody's Moodle username and password the same as his/her Webmail username and password, like we have for the class of 2010. We will have to wait until the end of term to do that because we do not want to disrupt academic progress for students who do not have these login problems. In the meantime, students with Moodle login problems should contact CIT at x7660 or cit@hope.edu, and we will fix them right away.
