WebMail Hardware Failure / Strange Email Messages

On Thursday, December 8 from approximately 8 p.m. the WebMail server experienced a hardware failure and was unavailable from 8 - 9:15 p.m. while the system was repaired.

Messages that were attempted for delivery during that time were lost. Those intended to receive messages during that time, from both on- and off-campus senders, will instead receive a message in their Inbox with an "unknown" sender and "none" as the subject. Please delete these messages.

We have also received a few reports of WebMail users with blank Inboxes. Clicking the [Date] sort order field in WebMail or rebooting the computer has resolved these issues.

Unfortunately due to the type of hardware failure that occurred there is no way to restore these attempted messages or trace the original sender.

November 2006 e-mail stats

The number of messages sent to Hope College e-mail accounts from off-campus increased by 15% for the month of November:

• November 2006 = 4,205,956
• October 2006 = 3,630,423
• September 2006 = 2,452,659
• August 2006 = 1,804,215

However, the percentage of these messages identified as "spam" (and thus blocked from delivery) also increased:

• November 2006 = 83%
• October 2006 = 79%
• September 2006 = 74%
• August 2006 = 75%
