FACULTY: Moodle for Spring 2007

The following was e-mailed to all faculty:
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues,

Even though we're in the middle of exam week and grading papers and all, now is actually not a bad time to consider Moodle for the coming Spring semester.

Moodle Newbies: If you have never used Moodle in any of your courses, you might want to consider it. It is a web browser-based learning management system that might help you stay in contact with your students using discussion forums and chat rooms, deliver closed-reserves type content in a protected way, post your syllabus, administer reading quizzes or surveys to your students, and many other things. If you would like to explore how it might be of pedagogical use to you on a "no-obligation" basis, please contact Barry Bandstra (bandstra@hope.edu) for a test drive. If you already know that you would like a new course created and just want to explore it yourself, contact CIT (cit@hope.edu or x7670) and specify the CRN of the course you want. They will help you set up a new user account if you need one, and get you started.

Moodle Clones: Those of you who would like to re-use past Moodle courses, please contact CIT (cit@hope.edu or x7670). All that's needed is the name of your past course and the semester in which you taught it. Then it will be cloned so you can update and reuse it. The cloning process entails making an exact copy of a past course, all except for the students and student data. The past course itself remains intact and you can continue to reference it and access all the student content that was generated in that course.

New Moodle Courses: If you already have a teacher user account and want a new Moodle course created for the coming Spring 2007 semester, or even for a later term, just contact CIT (cit@hope.edu or x7670) and let them know the course number and name.

Moving Course Content into Moodle: If you would like some help moving your syllabus or other course content into a Moodle course, have we got a deal for you! CIT has hired a course content mover who will work with you and your existing material, and will help you set up and structure your course in Moodle. And the service is absolutely free for the asking. If you would like to learn more about this new service, contact Barry Bandstra (bandstra@hope.edu) or CIT (cit@hope.edu or x7670).

Archiving Past Courses: Once we move into the Spring 2007 semester, Moodle courses from the Fall 2006 semester will be moved from their current position in the Division/Department listings to the "Archive" category. Once you log in to Moodle as a teacher, you will still see the past courses listed in "My Moodle" -- they will appear grayed out, but still accessible by clicking on the link.

Any questions or comments about Moodle: Contact Barry Bandstra (bandstra@hope.edu) or CIT (cit@hope.edu or x7670) and they will put you in touch with the right person.

Sincerely,

- Barry Bandtra, Director of Academic Computing and Professor of Religion
- Jeff Pestun, CIT
