Internet Connection Upgrade

In recent weeks CIT has been closely tracking the performance of the College's Internet connection. Many will not find the results surprising - things were busy (and thus slow) from about 11:00am until 1:30am each day. As a result, CIT has increased the size of the College's connection by 66% (from 30 Mbps to 50 Mbps). The upgrade has already provided a boost in performance - YouTube clips now load without a problem!

What about Calendars?

Now that we've been using the new Google-based 1HOPE email system for over a year, people sometimes ask when they can start using the Google Calendar functionality that was included. Well, the truth is that many people on campus already are - it's a great way to manage your personal calendar. And while CIT hasn't yet offered formal training courses (see below!), you can simply click on the Calendar link in the upper-left corner of your email window to try it out. Like the 1HOPE email system, Google Calendar is both intuitive and powerful - plus it includes a great help center and tutorials (accessed by clicking Help in the upper-right corner of the Calendar window.

Also, you may have heard about a new room scheduling system that the College has purchased. This new package is currently being implemented and, when finished, will offer integration with your Google calendar.

With regard to training, CIT plans to offer formal courses in the coming months, just like we did for 1HOPE email. Once the room scheduling system is finished, look for an announcement!

Web Server Crash

The web server for hope.edu was bombarded with requests from two search engines around 10:00 am this morning and crashed under the heavy load. CIT restarted the server and it is fully operational again. The hope.edu website, KnowHope, CampusMail, and CopyWorks were all affected by this incident. Some MFPs also could not send email because they use the web server to do so. Downtime was approximately 10 minutes.

Internet Slowness

CIT has received several comments regarding Internet speed from users in residence areas, classrooms and labs. We are currently evaluating the network and connection speeds and have plans for improvements in the very near future. These improvements will include optimizing the current network traffic monitors and ordering additional bandwidth. A 3x increase in DSL speeds for many apartment and cottage residents was ordered recently and many students in these areas have already experienced improvements.

We realize that a reliable connection to the Internet is valuable and necessary to the students, faculty and staff in the Hope College community and we appreciate your continued patience as we address the issue.

Students: Need help with your computer?

Students, if you need help getting your computer connected, removing viruses, or using wireless, bring your computer to a ConnectHope Troubleshooting Fair. A technician will sit down with you and work through the problem (free of charge!). All Fairs are held in the CIT Office, located in Durfee Hall near the President's House:

Mondays = 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Wednesdays = 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Fridays = 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

If you use a laptop, all you need to bring is the computer and power supply. If you use a desktop, just bring the tower (CPU). Note that you are required to stay with your PC while it's being worked on.

If you need more immediate assistance or help with things like reinstalling Windows or repairing hardware, we've negotiated reduced rates for Hope students/faculty/staff at several local computer repair shops. For more information and examples of the discounts, look here.
