About the Hope College Tennis Academies: After 29 years of teaching in West Michigan clubs, I finally decided to act on a long-term dream of mine and offer a tennis academy for players in Michigan during the summer months. The result was the forming of the West Michigan Tennis Academy in the summer of 2003. That academy, which still exists, was a monumental success; selling out each week of the summer and helping many players reach new levels in tennis for the first time. In the summer of 2004, I was excited to be able to start the Hope College Tennis Academy in Holland, Michigan which sold out virtually every week we offered it. The Hope College Tennis Academies are summer-only camps that do not offer an overnight option, but do offer players the same full scope of training like the famous academies of the south. In our Daytime Academy, players practice five hours a day, from 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. During that time the players will drill on-court, do strength training specifically designed for tennis, participate in our Etcheberry speed and agility program, and most importantly, play daily competitive matches under the supervision of the pro staff. Our Night Academy is designed for players that can not attend the Daytime Academy. It is offered to players in grades 9-12 only. Our QuickStart Academy uses the USTA’s new QuickStart play format to allow players to compete and rally the ball at an earlier age. Balls, rackets, and even court sizes are scaled down to the younger player so they can have a realistic experience in playing tennis. Our experienced staff has developed more than 180 HS state champions and Our staff is looking forward to another great summer with the players in this area. Hope to see you on the courts soon.
Jorge Capestany, PTR & USPTA Master Professional What to expect at the Hope College Tennis Academy Strength Training: Our players will have a weekly tennis-specific strength training session with our staff. Players will learn the same exercises that the touring pros do when they work out. Tournament Coaching: Our pro staff will attend the Holland Open (July 4-9) and teh MAC Dog Days Junior Challenger in Grand Rapids (Aug. 5-7) to coach players who are enrolled in the Academy this summer. Parents' Weekly Email Update: At the end of each week we will send an email directly to the parents of each player, updating them on what was worked on throughout the week. Friday Match Play Day: Every Friday at the Academy is our College Match Day. Players are divided into teams and compete with other players the entire morning. We will end each week by giving the players the option of going to the beach for Navy Seals training or staying at the courts for additional match play. Match Play: Our supervised match play is the most valuable aspect our players will get out of the Academy. Our coaches will be on the court while our players compete, to help them during actual match play. Mental Toughness: Our daily match play allows our coaching staff to be on the court with the players while they compete. This is an excellent way to help players learn about mental toughness skills. Speed & Agility: Our Etcheberry certified staff will use this system to train for speed and agility. Developed by Pat Etcheberry who has been the speed and agility coach to more than 24 grand slam tennis champions. Extra Help Sessions: Back by popular demand! We want to make sure no one leaves the Hope College Tennis Academy without getting their problem areas worked out. Any player that wishes to get some extra help on one or more of his/her shots can stay after the Academy on Tuesday and/or Wednesday and receive some extra attention from our pro staff. |
