Review
of Dutch Chicago (excerpted)
in Dagblad van het Noorden, 19 July 2003
The main
success for Groningers was the garbage collection business.
They did not engage in illegal activties; they were simply
good at it. They did not try to take each other’s clients.
If you had secured a route for yourself, you would be allowed
to keep it forever. But outsiders did encounter fierce competition.
The “Scavengers’ Association” was known
in Chicago as the “Dutch Mafia.” …They
did eventually have an encounter with the real Mafia when
William Daddano, “Willie Potatoes,” planned a
take-over… but the Dutch controlled the dumps and they
did not let the Mafia unload.
