Good News About Diversity & International Education at Hope College

Amy Otis-De Grau Receives Award from IES Abroad
Amy OtisAmy Otis-De Grau, Hope's director of international education, has received the Professional Development Award from IES Abroad. IES Abroad, which is one of the largest third-party providers of study-abroad experiences in the United States, gives the award to an educator who has served the study-abroad field in a professional and committed manner. Fifth Annual Pow Wow to be Held at Hope College DeVos Fieldhouse on Saturday, Oct. 24

HOLLAND - "Honoring the Pink Shawl" is the theme of the Holland Pow Wow, the area's fifth annual traditional pow wow. The public is invited.  Admission is free.

The pow wow will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Highlights will include the Grand Entry at 1 p.m. and a native storyteller, sponsored by the Holland Museum, at 3 p.m.

Presented by the Anishnabek of West Michigan, the pow wow is scheduled in a spirit of reconciliation and is a family event open to attendance by all peoples.  The pow wow will feature authentic Native American dancers in regalia, Native singers and drummers, along with Native American-made jewelry and other goods for sale. There will be a concession featuring native food. The event's planning committee anticipates participants from throughout Michigan.

Second Issue of Hope College’s Diversity Journal is Now Available
The second issue of Outreach, the diversity journal for Hope College, is ready for your consideration, and I invite you to read it. As a proud graduate, person of color and representative on the Alumni Association Board of Directors, I am pleased that Hope is focused and committed to sharing the college’s history, achievements, challenges and strategies for improving in the areas of diversity and inclusion. In particular, this issue offers readers an in-depth perspective on Hope's unique Phelps Scholars Program and its 10-year anniversary of bringing together students of all races and backgrounds.

Library Hosts Intern from Queretaro - July/August 2009
The Van Wylen Library is hosting Luis Alberto Aldama, an intern from the Autonomous University of Queretaro, for three weeks this summer as he furthers his knowledge in library science. Luis, who majored in literature and works in the literature library at Queretaro, is meeting with library staff to learn more about a wide variety of library systems. He will also be helping the Van Wylen Library evaluate their collections in Latin American literature. The visit was arranged by Alfredo Gonzales, Dean for International and Multicultural Education. Hope and the Autonomous University of Queretaro established a formal relationship in 1996 that has since included exchanges of students, faculty and cultural programs. Welcome, Luis!

GLCA Honors Alfredo Gonzales for Service - May 2009
Alfredo Gonzales, associate provost and dean for international and multicultural education, has been honored for his role as a founding member 20 years ago of the Great Lakes Colleges Association's Committee on Institutional Commitment to Educational Equity (CICEE).  The GLCA celebrated the 20th anniversary during the committee's spring meeting. Gonzales, who is also a past chair of the committee, and the other founding members were honored not only for helping establish the committee but for their "continued commitment to the well-being of people of color on GLCA member campuses." Phelps Scholars Recognized as Exemplary Diversity Program - April 2009
The Phelps Scholars Program has been recognized by the Association of American Colleges and Universities as an exemplary diversity program in higher education. Hope is one of 32 institutions featured in the AAC&U publication "More Reasons for Hope: Diversity Matters in Higher Education." Others among the featured honorees include the University of Michigan; Duke University in Durham, N.C.; Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.; and Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. Read more ...

Physics researchers at Hope are participating in a NASA-funded collaborative project that is linking multiple teams in an international effort that could result in a giant leap in mankind's understanding a type of star. Read more ...
