FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

Self Assessment and Career Planning

Action Steps

  • Use general education requirements and elective classes to investigate academic majors of interest.
  • Get acquainted with the Office of Career Services - come visit.
  • Assess interests and values through career assessments.
  • Assess and develop skills through curricular and extra-curricular activities:
      communication, problem-solving, analytical thinking, teamwork, dependability, computer and Internet use.
  • Research various career fields of interest and evaluate your career options.
  • Make a tentative selection of major.
  • Build a support network of faculty, staff, and administrators on campus.
  • Get a summer job that will provide an opportunity to learn about the world of work.

Services/Programs

  • Attend a Office of Career Services "Here's Looking at You" workshop in which you take the Strong Interest Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to help you define your interests and personality type.
  • Come to the Career Library and browse a variety of information on summer jobs and career options.
  • Meet with staff of OCS to learn how to develop and implement a tentative four-year plan.


SOPHOMORES
Career Exploration and Investigation

Action Steps

  • Continue to explore your academic interests through the general education requirements and classes in majors that interest you.
  • Re-evaluate interests and values through career assessments.
  • Continue to assess and develop skills through curricular and extra-curricular activities:
      communication, problem-solving, analytical thinking, teamwork, dependability, computer and Internet use.
  • Meet with your academic advisor to decide on a major and discuss career options.
  • Explore internship opportunities.
  • Explore off-campus study options for your third or fourth year.
  • Take an active role in clubs and organizations.
  • Get involved in community service/volunteer activities.
  • Job shadow and interview professionals for career information.
  • Secure an on-campus, off-campus, and/or summer job (only available on-campus) in a career area of interest.

  • Utilize the Career Resource Network to arrange information interviews.
  • Meet with staff of OCS to discuss your major/career options, questions and concerns in a Sophomore Spotlight meeting.

JUNIORS

Gaining Career Experience Career/Graduate School Planning

Action Steps

  • Re-evaluate interests and values.
  • Continue to develop and demonstrate skills:
      communication, problem-solving, analytical thinking, teamwork, dependability, computer and Internet use.
  • Join student chapters of professional organizations.
  • Take an active role in clubs and organizations.
  • Explore and make arrangements for off-campus study options.
  • Decide between graduate school or career entry upon graduation.
  • Identify at least three career and/or graduate or professional school options that "fit" with your interests.
  • Investigate graduate schools of interest, their application procedures and deadlines. Register and prepare for admissions tests (GRE, LSAT, GMAT, etc.)
  • Formulate a job\graduate school search time line and plans.
  • Discuss your options with academic and OCS staff.
  • Develop a resume.
  • Get professional experience through an internship, volunteering or a summer job.
  • Build your network of contacts in fields of interest.
  • Participate in college-sponsored career fairs.

Action Steps

  • Attend Office of Career Services workshops targeted for seniors.
  • Finalize graduate school search timeline and plans.
  • Take standardized test for graduate school entrance, if not already required in junior year.
  • Choose faculty and employers who will be references for you.
  • Decide on the type of professional work you are seeking.
  • Revise and update resume and draft a cover letter.
  • Sign up for a simulated interview at the OCS.
  • Get an internship or work-related experience if you haven't already.
  • Formulate a "Plan B" or alternate plans.
  • Begin to research companies/organizations, and the opportunities they offer.
  • Open a credential file at the OCS if you are an education major.
  • Build your network of contacts in fields of interest.
  • Participate in college-sponsored career fairs.
  • Take advantage of on- and off- campus interviews.
  • Keep a record of contacts with employers and/or graduate schools.
