Awarness Week of Years Past
Some events during Disability Awarness Week stay the same from year to year. These events include the following:
MONDAY
WHEELCHAIR CHALLENGE
Student Development
During this time faculty, staff, and several students will begin their daylong mobility impairment simulation.
They will occupy the chairs for six-, twelve- or twenty-four hours. As you encounter them on the campus during the day, please be friendly and helpful when necessary.
POETRY READING
Take a relaxing break, complete with refreshments, while listening to short thought provokingm humorous, and touching recitations concerning life with disabilities.
TUESDAY
DISABILITY SIMULATIONS
DeWitt Lounge
This is an opportunity to simulate mobility impairment, hearing impairment, vision impairment, and learning disabilities, as well as gather information about a number of hidden disabilities.
MOVIE NIGHT
The Kletz
Enjoy a video with the addition of descriptive video services (DVS). DVS is an audio description included on a movie track to benefit people with visual impairments.
Thursday
DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTER OPEN HOUSE
VanWylen Library
This room contains the latest in computer equiptment for the visully impaired, blind and print impaired individual. Take a few minutes to stop by and expereince this technology.
Friday
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Come and celebrate the week’s events and Hope’s accepting and caring community spirit. A poster collage for each individual participating in the Wheelchair Challenge on Monday will be displayed. Join in the fun and free ice cream. The Ice Cream Social is sponsored by the Vice President/Dean of Students, Dr. Richard Frost.

WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL
The Grand Rapids Pacers Wheelchair Basketball Team chalenged Geln VanWieren's Hope College basketball players in a lively game of basketball. The Hope players occupied athletic chairs with brief instrustions in techniques and rule changes. This was a fun and exciting event that all enjoyed.
BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS: The Story of ADD
Many of us find ourselves struggling to understand this condition. We are concerened how best to accommodate thoes in our lives who have ADD. The event, presented by Jean Lindell and Rick Dernberger of the Counseling Center, helped to bridge this gap for many of us.

DOGS, DOGS, DOGS
This event, co-sponsored by the Counseling Center, was a night for all dog lovers interested in the working dog's role in the lives of people with disabilities. This event was lively with the best and the brightes in the dog world, as therapy dogs, service dgs, and dog guides and their owners/handlers talk about their experiences with their canine companions. There were even several puppies-in-training preparing for their upcoming careers.
