Asia, Age 6

The pediatrician only had to look at Asia's parent's documentation of the past two weeks before he ordered blood and urine tests STAT. An hour later, Asia's parents received a devastating call from the doctor telling them their daughter had juvenile diabetes. He said Asia's blood sugar number was off the charts and that they had to leave immediately for DeVos.

When Asia and her parents arrived at DeVos, the medical staff could not believe she was still alive. Her blood sugar number was over 800 (in toddlers, it shouldn't be over 200), and the majority of her organs had begun to shut down. They said it would be a miracle if she survived. After 24 hours of being hooked up to numerous machines, monitors, IVs and constant professional medical care, Asia finally began to really get better. What should have been a 2-week hospital stay ended in a little less than a week. She even walked away from this brush with death without damage to her brain or other organs. The medical staff considers her to be a true miracle child!

Today, Asia enjoys swimming, dancing, and playing doggie. Asia's family likes to go to the park and ride the carousel at the mall.
