Welcome to the Office of Multicultural Education!
The mission of Hope College is to “educate
students for lives of leadership and service
in a global society
through academic and co-curricular programs of recognized
excellence
in the liberal arts and in the context of the historic Christian
faith.”
One aspect of preparing for global citizenship is
through building relationships
with people from different backgrounds.
Throughout
your Hope experience,
we invite you to become involved in the Office
of Multicultural Education,
where we seek to establish relationships
with people from all backgrounds,
experiences, and perspectives.
This enables us to learn from each other and
become more enlightened
about the world in which we live.
Our primary objective is to develop collaborative partnerships with
students,
faculty, staff, alumni, and the greater Holland community
to embrace and infuse
diversity into the core fabric of the institution.
In order to prepare students to
live and work in a global society,
cross-cultural understanding is essential. The
Office of Multicultural
Education uses a variety of approaches, including workshops,
lectures,
interactive programs, films, retreats, and dialogues to engender
understanding
that promotes social justice, equity, and mutual respect.
We live in a dynamic and complex society. Nothing is exactly as
it appears. Therefore,
the essence of a liberal arts education is
to help you gain new ideas and ways of
seeing the world; critically
reflect, question, and examine information; and acquire
skills that
will enable you to thrive in a rapidly changing world. The Office
of Multicultural
Education provides a variety of educational and
developmental opportunities to enhance
the learning and growth process,
which will ultimately lead to increased value of self and others.
We recognize that there are numerous elements of diversity. Every
individual should be
equally valued. Because, diversity at every
level is complex and deserves rigorous attention,
the Office of Multicultural
Education focuses primarily on racial/ethnic diversity. Although
o
ther departments at Hope are specialized in different areas of diversity,
including foci on
physical challenges, religion, sexual orientation,
and gender, we advocate and support the
efforts towards respect and
equality for all individuals regardless of their differences.
Multicultural Education is all encompassing - it includes EVERYONE.
We are committed to
providing support and guidance to all students
as well as the campus community as we
seek to make the Hope community
a place where everyone can grow and learn together.
Sincerely,
Vanessa Greene
