More on Letter Writing

A principle component of Amnesty International's action is letter writing. Approximately every two weeks, Amnesty International sends out a list of cases where individuals are facing serious, and often life-threatening, human rights violations. Urgent action cases may range from cases of torture to being arrested without charged to unjust imprisonment. Amnesty International's members write letters to relevant government officials worldwide in order bring the situations to their attention and to place pressure on the officials to improve them.

As a result of these urgent actions, over 40,000 prisoners of conscience have been released. On July 20, 2007, Mesfin Woldemariam, Ethiopia's most prominent human rights defends was released along with 37 Ethiopian opposition party officials, prominent human rights defenders, and journalists. On January 27, 2006, a prisoner of conscience from Russia was released after "disappearing" on the 12th. In September 2005, 1.2 million letters from Amnesty International members saved a Nigerian woman from being stoned to death.
