History

The freshman girls of the class of 1960 decided to become the charter members of a New Greek organization due to the fact that because of increased enrollment to Hope College, the sororities were growing too large. On May 12, 1957, the Alpha Gamma Phi sorority was formed. This name originated from the Greek words for Anchor, Stability, and Faith.

"Friendship, Anchor of our Strength," is our motto, which is derived from the belief that friendship is the basic tie in any sort of group. Our crest consists of an Anchor, a Pine Tree, and a Golden Chain. The anchor represents Hope College, and our association with the school. Strength is recognized in the symbol of the pine tree. Each point of the pine tree represents a principle upon which the sorority was founded. The Golden Chain represents bonds and strengths of friendship. The sorority's colors, forest green and gold, symbolize the pine tree, the anchor of friendship, and the golden chain of friendship. The yellow carnation was selected as our flower to exhibit our colors of green and gold.

Our relationship with our brothers, the Knickerbockers, began in the spring of 1997, after severing our ties with the Arcadian Fraternity.

The Eight Principles upon which we were founded:
Friendship
Caring for our body
Caring for our mind
Service
Love
Fellowship
Loyalty
Faith
