About Us
Our mission is to aid in the establishment of diversity and to promote awareness of Asian and Asian-American history, experiences, issues and perspectives on Hope College's campus.
We provide events that celebrate Asian and Asian-American heritage. We aim to educate and stimulate discussion within the community of Hope College and strengthen the identity of all HAPA members.
We aim to create an environment and building a community in which all cultures will be visible and accessible to our fellow students, thereby opening an avenue for understanding, learning, and appreciating different cultures. We feel this is a step towards eliminating bias that grows from fear, stereotypes, and intolerance.
We welcome anyone committed to, or interested in our mission regardless
of race, religion, sex, or nationality.

Minor: Management
Bio: I am from Singapore, a tiny little dot on the world globe, a country I love to call home! Coming to study at Hope College has opened my eyes to many issues that I would not normally face at home. That is one of the reasons I am in HAPA--> to learn more from my fellow students, and to enjoy more of College life with the amazing friends one can make in this organization! Another reason I am in HAPA is because I miss Asian food quite a bit when I am here, and HAPA helps me overcome my cravings with numerous fun outings with Asian food/snacks! HAPA is a great organization with fun people and numerous exciting activities for everyone to enjoy! |

Bio: Hello. I'm currently a senior who happens to be a social work major with a Japanese minor. I was originally from Los Angeles, CA and moved to Holland just for the fun of it. So I guess I will claim Holland as my hometown. I joined HAPA because there are people who do not realize that Asia has more countries than just China, Japan and Korea. I wish to expand people's knowledge about other Asian cultures. I also like food... This is also my last year in HAPA so I'm going to make the best of it with my wonderful MSO buddies!

Major: Nursing
Bio: Hi! I'm currently a junior and studying nursing at Hope College. I'm also a Korean girl who loves all kinds of Asian cultures. Although I haven't traveled to any of other Asian countries, I grew up mostly in South Africa, Korea, and US. Having this cultural background, I truly enjoy meeting new people from all over the world and listening to their different stories. And out of all the mouth watering Asian food choices, I LOVE pad thai. period. I would also love to travel the world in the future and visit as many countries as I can to learn and see the world in so many different cultural views. But since it will take anyone a fortune to visit every country in the world, wouldn't it be fantastic if we can still talk and share various cultural experiences through HAPA? So, come and join! =] |

Name: Thanh Nguyen
Position: Website Coordinator
Birthdate: 09/06/1991
Hometown: Holland, MI
Year: Sophomore
Major: Japanese
Minor: Asian Studies
Bio: I enjoy Asian food, especially rice, and I love Asian mythology and folklore. I have travelled overseas multiple times to Southeast Asia, and have visited ancient pagodas and temples, as well as an imperial palace. I joined HAPA, since I believe that Asians are strongly depicted by stereotypes and false information, and I have a drive to make a difference in bringing an awareness of Asian culture to others. I chose to become a Japanese major, because I believe in studying and preserving Asian history in the context of rapid modern development. Although we may continue to develop new and unique things, I feel that, in order to maintain our identities, we as human beings also need to remember the past. |
