NO Summer Tryout

Due to a low number of girls able to attend the tryout on August 16th, we WILL NOT be having the tryout. There will be, however, another tryout at the beginning of the school year. The tryout typically occurs the second week of classes. Members selected at this tryout will be able to start performing at the second game. It will still be mandatory to participate in both seasons of the team. If you are especially interested in being able to attend camp, or have any questions, email pompons@hope.edu

Summer Tryouts

If you are interested in joining the Pom team, this is your chance! We are looking for interested dancers for our 2009-2010 Pom team. We will be holding a summer tryout for incoming freshman in August. It is a requirement for all freshman to participate in both seasons (please e-mail pompons@hope.edu with any questions regarding this policy). If you would like to tryout for the team, but are unable to make the summer tryout, there will be another tryout held after school begins. It might also be possible to make other accommodations, so please e-mail with questions or concerns.

The official tryout date will be Sunday, August 16th at 9:30 AM.
If selected as a member of the team, you will be expected to move in early for a week of practice, team building, and fundraising.

At the tryout, you will be expected to learn a short routine, approximately 1.5 minutes in length, as well as a short kickline. You will also be asked to perform some basic jumps and turns. Please wear black shorts or pants and a white tank. We will be outside, weather permitting, so gym shoes are appropriate. Also suggested is a water bottle or two and a lunch. The tryouts will probably be done before 4pm. You will be notified that day if you have made the team.

Camp is mandatory and will be August 23-28, and freshman will be able to participate in all orientation activities beginning on Friday.

The Pom Team is a low time commitment team, with practices about 6 hours per week, with additional practice on game days. Practices will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights. The time is TBA. School always comes first, however, there should not be any problems balancing school work and the team. Please email with any concerns about school work and the pom team.

Basketball Season

Off the field and onto the court, the Hope College Pom Pon team performs for an up-close crowd. To entertain this crowd the team performs U.D.A. style routines. The style consists of more dance-based moves, trading in kicklines and pom runs for turns, leaps and other crowd pleasing dance moves.

The team also invites Hope College guys to join them for the annual Guy/Girl routine. For this special performance, the guys attend practices to learn a routine in which they will dance with their pom partners. The routine is performed at a basketball game and is truly a crowd favorite!

Football Season

During football season, routines are choreographed using traditional pom style moves, including stiff arm movements while pom running, kicklines, toe-touches and splits. This style is perfect for entertaining the stadium crowd. The team often ends routines with its signature pose - the Hope "H" formed with orange and blue poms.

Creating the Pom Pon Team

The Pom Pon Team is a fairly new club at Hope College, getting its start in 2002 by Heather Qualman and Liz Tyndell, both graduates of 2004. Heather and Liz were members of their High Schools' pom teams and wanted to create a team at Hope for others who shared in their pom interest.
