FOR CURRENT SOPHOMORES OR JUNIORS:

Goldwater Scholarship:
Up to 300 one-two year scholarship for students in mathematics, engineering or natural sciences with career interests in these disciplines. Premed students eligible if they anticipate a career in research. Scholarship of up to $7,500 annually covers tuition, fees, books, room and board.

FOR CURRENT JUNIORS:

U.S. Department of State Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program:
For outstanding students from all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds, who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State. Students apply during the sophomore year of college. The fellowship award includes tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees during the junior and senior years of college, and during the first year of graduate study for a master's degree in international affairs. Truman Fellowship:
$30,000 scholarships for students who wish to enter graduate school in preparation for careers in government or other public service; $3,000 of the award is granted for the senior year of undergraduate study. Indispensable qualifications are outstanding leadership ability, a strong record of community service, and commitment to improving government services to the public. Selection committees are looking for people who will shake up the system. Candidates must be nominated by the college during their junior year. Rhodes Scholarship:
Full support for one or two years of post-graduate study at Oxford University. The application process begins in the junior year. Review panels are looking for students of proven intellectual and academic achievement, strong leadership ability, and some participation in athletics. About 30 awards are granted annually. Application deadline: October 15 in your senior year, but consult with David Cunningham no later than the spring semester of your junior year. Marshall Scholarship:
A large stipend to cover tuition, fees, living allowance, book grant, and travel expenses for U.S. citizens in support of two years of study toward a post-graduate degree in any subject at a British university. Selectors are looking for articulate, intellectually wide-ranging, outward looking candidates who plan to take up careers not only in higher education but also in commerce and industry, the arts and professions, and public life generally. Up to 40 scholarships are awarded annually. Application deadline: October 15 in your senior year, but consult with David Cunningham no later than the spring semester of your junior year. Udall Scholarships:
For sophomores or juniors who intend to pursue careers in environmental public policy, or Native American/Alaskan Native students who intend to pursue careers in health care or tribal policy. The scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board to a maximum of $5,000 for one academic year. College endorsement required for each candidate. FOR CURRENT SENIORS:

Note well: because many fellowships have deadlines early in the senior year, juniors should prepare early if they intend to apply for any of the fellowships listed below. Discuss them with your advisor, Pew Society mentor and other contacts. Work to build your resume for a successful application in your senior year.

Davies-Jackson Scholarship:
Full support for two years of graduate study at St. John's College in the University of Cambridge, England. Fields supported include Archaeology & Anthropology, Classics, Economics, English, History, Modern & Medieval Languages, and Music. Only one of these scholarships is awarded annually, and only students from selected private colleges (including Hope) are eligible to apply. Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship for Minorities:
Three-year $17,000 annual awards (plus $7,500 to the college in lieu of tuition and fees) for ethnic minority students at or near the beginning of their graduate work in all fields. These fellowships are designed to increase the presence of under-represented minorities on the nation's college and university faculties. About 60 are awarded annually. Lenore Annenberg Teaching Fellowship: This fellowship is intended for students committed to teaching.  It provides a $30,000 one-year fellowship to support students in the completion of a yearlong master’s program at one of four of the nation’s top teacher education programs—Stanford University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Virginia, and the University of Washington. In exchange, the candidates must agree to teach for three years in high-need secondary schools. Fulbright Awards for Graduate Study Abroad:
Full grants (travel, language instruction, tuition, book grant, health insurance, and living expenses for one academic year) or travel grants for U.S. citizens with a B.A. degree or its equivalent to pursue study in a foreign country. Candidates must propose a specific project and must generally demonstrate proficiency in the language of the host country; some countries also offer opportunities to teach English. About 700 awards are made annually. Application deadline: Mid October, 2011.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship:
Full support for post-graduate study at Cambridge University, for students of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential from every country of the world other than the United Kingdom. Application deadline: Early November. http://www.gatesscholar.org/

Harvey Fellowship:
A $14,000 stipend for graduate work at any top-rated Ph.D. program, renewable for two additional years. Provides financial support to Christian graduate students with a unique vision to impact society through their field and who are pursuing graduate studies at premier institutions in their discipline (in the United States or abroad). Up to fifteen awards are made annually. Hertz Graduate Fellowships in Applied Physical Sciences:
Awards of $25,000 (plus cost of education allowance) for graduate study in applied physical sciences at approved universities; renewable up to five years. Application deadline: Late October. www.hertzfndn.org or e-mail askhertz@hertzfoundation.org

Javits Fellowship:
Over 40 fellowships of up to $40,000 awarded annually to students in humanities (60%), arts (20%), and social sciences (20%) for pursuing a doctoral or MFA degree. Fellowship renewable for up to four years. Application deadline: October 5, 2011. http://www.ed.gov/programs/iegpsjavits/index.html

James Madison Fellowship:
Two-year awards of up to $24,000 for U.S. citizens who aspire to be secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and social studies. Awards are intended to support master's level graduate study of the roots, principles, framing, and development of the U.S. Constitution. Recipients must agree to teach full time in a secondary school for at least one year per year of fellowship support. At least one award is available annually in each state. Mitchell Scholarship:
Supports a year of graduate study in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Prospective Scholars apply directly to the US-Ireland Alliance that administers the Mitchell Scholarship program. Applications should be made as early as possible but applications and all other required material must be postmarked no later than October 10. There are no restrictions as to academic field of study. Scholars receive tuition, room, support for travel to and within Ireland and a stipend of $11,000 to cover other necessary expenses for the term of study. 12 awards made annually. http://www.us-irelandalliance.org/scholarships.html

NSEP (National Security Education Program) Graduate International Fellowships:
$12,000 (for domestic study) to $20,000 fellowships (for foreign study) to support U.S. graduate students who will pursue the study of 40 languages and 75 geographic areas deemed critical to national security. Recipients of these fellowships must fulfill a service obligation and must be willing to consider careers in government service. Application deadline: January. http://www.borenawards.org/

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships:
About 900 three-year fellowships of $15,000 per year (plus $10,500 to the university) for study that leads to an advanced degree in mathematical, physical, medical, biological sciences, engineering or the history of science. OAS Scholarships for Academic Studies:
The Regular Training Program of the Organization of American States seeks to promote the economic, social, scientific and cultural development of the member states through the advanced training of their citizens in priority areas. Fellowships are awarded for 1-2 years of graduate study to be undertaken in any of the member countries. The fellowship provides round-trip air travel, monthly subsistence allowance, tuition, an allowance for books and study materials, and health insurance. Deadline January 15. http://www.educoas.org/

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships:
1,000 awards of up to $25,000 to study or train for one academic year in another country where Rotary Clubs are located. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the language of the host country. Initial application must be made through a local Rotary Club in the community where the applicant has legal or permanent residence. Soros Fellowship for New Americans:
Up to 30 fellowships awarded each year in support of up to two years of graduate study in the United States for resident alien, naturalized U.S. citizens, or children of two parents who are both naturalized citizens. The applicant must either have a bachelor's degree or be in her/his final year of undergraduate study. Each year the Fellow receives a maintenance grant of $20,000 and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of the U.S. graduate program attended by the Fellow. A Fellow may pursue a graduate degree in any professional field (e.g., engineering, medicine, law, or social work) or scholarly discipline in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and fine and performing arts.
