Billiards tournament at Golden 8 Ball Billiards
Nate Johnson of Golden 8 Ball Billiards is looking for volunteers to aid in a Billiards tournament at Golden 8 Ball Billiards. This event will be in conjunction with Nothing But Nets to raise awareness (and money) for Malaria and it's effects specifically in African nations. Also, after the tournament, Hope student band Keep the Aspidistra Flying will be playing a benefit concert. The tournament will start at 7:30, with the concert opener going on at 9:30. Anyone interested in selling popcorn, taking money at the door or helping clean up at the end should email Nate at golden8ball@gmail.com

Volunteering at the PGA Championship
Lighthouse of Oakland County has been given the opportunity to staff the premium hospitality areas at the PGA Championship being held at Oakland Hills Country Club from August 4-10. The following will give you some details related to our participation in this year's event.

As the name suggests, the premium areas may vary from spaces within the clubhouse to temporary chalets (or tents) and will be air conditioned, have carpeting, furnishings, televisions, etc. The chalets are leased for the week by corporations for entertaining and the volunteers will be servers, bartenders, and runners. It is our understanding that bartenders will provide alcoholic beverages (nothing too fancy or complicated) and therefore must be at least 18 and have some experience. Their will be some training provided by Levy in advance of the event. Food will be provided in a buffet format. The suite attendants will ensure that the buffet tables are properly stocked, clean, that there are sufficient plates, napkins, utensils, etc. They will also pick up empty plates and glasses and help to see that the guests are satisfied with a quality level of food and beverage service. While experience might be helpful, it isn't mandatory. The runners will be "go-fors" - getting food and beverages from storage areas or food preparation areas and making sure that sufficient quantities are maintained.

We anticipate the approximate hours for these volunteers to be from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. We do not expect all volunteers to want to work the entire day and we do have the flexibility to split these assignments into two shifts. If we do that, I would expect the shifts to be approximately 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m and 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. An advantage of that is the volunteer will be able to see the golf tournament either before or after their shift. We will not know the exact hours of operation until May or June. It is possible that the corporations and/or their guests may offer tips. If so, they are the groups to keep.

Now for the tough part. All of these volunteers must commit to working the same shift all 7 days of the tournament.

We realize that this is a significant commitment. We are obtaining these volunteer commitments in an effort to raise revenue so that we can fulfill our mission of providing a continuum of client-centered services that move people from poverty and crisis to independence and self-sufficiency.

Your efforts in assisting us with this endeavor are greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in volunteering, please submit your name, address, phone number, shift preference and position preference by April 15th to:

pgachamp@lighthouseoakland.org

You will be contacted in the next 30 days to confirm your attendance.

Camp Discovery
The following is a message from Sheryl Darroch, from the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan.

Our Camp Discovery is the only camp in Michigan for children with epilepsy, and is run almost exclusively by volunteers. We are currently looking for volunteers that would be willing to act as camp counselors at our 5 day and 4 night camp. Camp volunteers will receive training from experts on epilepsy and camp procedures, free room and board and great friendships and memories to last a lifetime. We are expecting 95 campers this year, and with a counselor to camper ratio of 1 to 3, and a fully staffed 24-hour medical staff; we could really use your help.

Camp dates for this year are Sunday, June 29 through Thursday, July 3, 2008 with volunteer training/orientation taking place on Saturday, June 28, 2008, and is held at Sherman Lake YMCA Outdoor Center in Augusta, Michigan. Check out pictures from Camp Discovery 2007, or download the volunteer application.

As you may imagine, it takes a lot of funding to run a camp like this. We also have sponsorship opportunities available. What a great cause for your next fundraiser. You may want to sponsor one camper for $800 or a full cabin of 9 campers for $7,200.

I would welcome any amount of involvement from your organization. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Sheryl Darroch, MSW, Health Educator
