A. Qualifications for Summer Resident Assistant (RA) candidates:
- For May Term only: Available May 5 – June 1.
- For full summer: Available May 5, 2008 – August 12, 2008. Move-to for fall housing is August 12. (Summer RA’s may take up to 10 vacation days).
- Demonstrate good academic standing (minimum GPA of 2.5). Anyone with special circumstances should contact Residential Life Coordinator Matthew D’Oyly.
- Good disciplinary standing.
B. Preferences will be given to candidates who:
- Have prior Residential Life experience.
- Have demonstrated leadership ability through active participation in formal and informal community and campus organizations.
- Will be working first shift summer jobs (allowing for being around on campus in the evenings for duty rotations and programming).
C. Summer RA Expectations:
The Summer RA is responsible for representing the College in the living unit, which includes all responsibilities, which assist in making residential living a positive and supportive experience. These responsibilities can be divided into the following areas:
1. Community Development: The Summer RA is to establish and maintain relationships with all residents of the community. He/she should be sensitive to and aware of potential issues/concerns and how to address them in a supportive and responsible manner. It is important that Summer RAs be available to meet the needs and concerns of residents and to appropriately seek out support from supervisors regarding resident concerns.
2. Administration: Summer RA’s are required to thoroughly complete all paper work in a timely manner and perform duty responsibilities which will assist the professional staff in responding to student needs and issues. Summer housing requires accurate documentation for proper billing and housing turnover.
3. Community Rights and Responsibilities: The Summer RA will educate residents of College policies and expectations. Summer RA’s will consistently uphold policies and confront students who are unwilling to abide by established policies and procedures as outlined in the Student Handbook. Summer RA’s will also direct students to the appropriate staff person regarding questions or concerns with the judicial process. The RA will also be a role model of appropriate and ethical behaviors.
4. Additional Responsibilities:
a. Carry out duties in support of the Mission of Hope College.
b. Report any known cases of serious illness, accidents or unusual behavior to the Summer Residential Life leadership staff.
c. Actively participate in opening and closing of residential areas.
d. Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and perform summer duty responsibilities.
e. Accept assignment of limited other duties as deemed necessary by the Summer Residential Life leadership staff.
f. Recognize that changes may need to be made throughout the course of the summer as deemed appropriate by Summer Residential Life leadership staff.
g. Understand that at any given time during the summer, should a Summer RA not fulfill responsibilities or uphold policies, the Summer RA’s position may be terminated. Termination may require a housing move to another residential area as determined by the Housing Coordinator Cindy Vogelzang, Matthew D’Oyly Summer Residential Life Coordinator and Dr. John Jobson Director of Residential Life.
D. Compensation:
Compensation for the Summer RA is free housing for the time of employment. If for any reason employment is terminated, the RA will be responsible for the housing fees for the remainder of their summer on-campus housing.
