Applying for a Visiting Writers Series Internship
Application Deadline
November 17, 2008
Decision date: within a couple of days after you submit your letter
The Hope College Visiting Writers Series Internship is open to any student,
in any major, freshman-senior. The internship can be taken for one or two
credits; enroll for ENGL 395.01 and counts towards Fine Arts core credit.
Over the course of the semester, students gain invaluable experience and
insights as they take on the administration and management of a major, nationally-visible
arts program.
Interns convene as a group once a week for about an hour. During the week,
our duties include:
- Writing publicity and web copy for all events;
- Close reading of works by that season's line-up of authors;
- Background reading and research;
- Hosting and socializing with and transporting VWS guests: big names and bright
new stars in the American contemporary literary world;
- The workload varies by the week and can require as few as four
hours and as many as ten. Students leave the internship with a portfolio
of professional
writing samples, a recommendation letter detailing their contributions, and
a publication-quality complete author interview.
Questions about the internship? Contact Professor Carla Vissers (vissers@hope.edu).
