May Term in Australia and New ZealandLeader: Dr. Harvey Blankespoor
Offered for the first time from May 4 -24, 2009, this trip will be led by Professor Harvey Blankespoor. The May Term begins in Christchurch, N.Z. The first day, students will visit the Antarctic Center, then go to Kaikoura for whale watching, an albatross encounter and a walk to a seal colony. On the way to Mt. Cook & Hooker Glacier, students will visit a sheep farm. After a hike to Hooker Glacier to study the alpine flora and fauna, students will go to Milford Sound for a scenic cruise. On the way, they will go to a cave to observe glowworms. Then they will go for several days to the Outback before concluding the trip with 3-4 days of lectures, data collection and snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef. Guides will be present for most of the trip, giving historical and biological lectures and cultural information. Cost includes airfare, housing, transportation, guide fees, many meals, lodging and scheduled activities. It does not include the textbook, obtaining a visa, some meals, tuitition, vaccinations, and other personal expenses.
