Ski Pack

Peter Martin
The goal of the ski pack design was to create a pack that would assist a downhill skier in carrying the heavy equipment needed for skiing. The pack would be used for shorter trips such as carrying equipment from the car to the ski slopes, and longer trips including hiking up mountains to ski unmarked terrain. The major requirements of the pack include being able to attach the equipment quickly and securely, attach to the skier's back while leaving room for a backpack, and it should be reasonably priced. Addition considerations are weight, size, quality, design schedule and resistant to weather. Because of the many requirements the design process included exploring various options, and the result is a high quality ski pack that meets all of the requirements.
The ski pack design is a sturdy aluminum and steel frame that includes straps to fasten the equipment onto the frame, and hold the pack onto the skier's back. The upper frame acts as a horizontal ski boot shelf consisting of two channels held apart by three rods. A piece of backpack material covers three rods that support the weight of the boots. The boots are secured to the frame by several straps that connect to a clip in the center of the boots. Two vertical bars in the front and two angled channels in the rear support the upper frame. These bars and channels connect to a support rod that rests on the skier's hips. The skis are supported by a loop of strap that is attached near the bottom of the angled channels. The top of the skis and poles are clipped onto the upper rods. The lower portions of the poles slide into a cord that is attached to the angled channels. The ski pack is attached to the skier's back by two shoulder straps that cross over and attach to the support rod. The rod also has a waist strap that distributes the weight of the pack more efficiently.
The ski pack design is a success because it fulfills all of the requirements. It is a very sturdy frame that supports the heavy weight of the equipment without bending or shifting. The equipment attaches to the pack easily and quickly. Because the ski pack distributes the weight between the hips and shoulders it is comfortable to wear, and will definitely assist skiers' in carrying their heavy equipment.
