Cross-Country Ski Carry

Kevin Menken
The purpose of the Cross-Country Ski Carry is to assist in transporting a pair of cross-country skis from one location to another. It is also designed to perform the ftinction of attaching the skis and poles to a backpack. This feature is for use in the backcountry, where a cross-country skier may encounter a snowmelt. Due to the possible use in the backcountry, size and weight are very important issues to be considered.
The final design consists of two identical PVC plastic frames and two adjustable nylon straps. The plastic frames were machined out of a 1/4 " PVC plastic sheet. Testing was performed before arriving at the final design's critical dimensions. The adjustable straps were purchased as stock parts from a store.
The design was a partial success. The final design works well in transporting skis and poles from one location to another (e.g. from home to car). It firmly holds the skis and poles, is easy to use, and does not damage the skis. The design does not work as well for attaching the skis to the backpack. While the device is small and lightweight, it does not function perfectly. When used to attach to a backpack there is the possibility of the skis hitting the ground on downward slopes. There is also the possibility of the skis hitting the user's feet while walking. Additional work is required eliminate these problems.
