Passive Direct Box with Muted Instrument Tuning Interface

Matthew C. Kalajainen

Summary:

The direct box is commonly used in live and studio recording audio applications.  The purpose of the direct box is to both balance the audio signal and perform an impedance conversion on it.  This effectively allows for the signal to be sent long distances (greater than 30 feet) to an audio mixing console or microphone preamplifier without signal degradation or loss or susceptibility to noise induction.

There is a need in the music/entertainment industry for both a direct box of studio performance quality and the ease of use for live applications.  This product offers the best solution to both of those requirements.  The direct box features the finest audio components available for maximum fidelity.  A switching circuit has been integrated into the device to facilitate muting of the input signal during instrument tuning or breaks in the performance.  The device facilitates connection of an electronic instrument tuner, which is activated in correlation with the muted output mode.  The switching between the ready or muted tuning modes is accomplished with a footswitch mounted conveniently on the top of the direct box.  The device is completely passive, requiring no power supply.

The device functions combines the functions of a studio quality direct box and an A/B switchbox, but combines the two devices into one convenient package.  Despite the integration, the unit still retains fully functionality as either a passive direct box or as an A/B switchbox.

The direct box is designed to work with any acoustic/electric instrument or any instrument with high-impedance pickups.  The outputs will interface to all industry-standard audio devices.  The unit is designed to be a long lasting product-an investment that will faithfully serve the owner with many years of consistent use while withstanding the abuse of the performance environment.
