Distinguished Artist Award, Creative Writing

The Distinguished Artist Award in Creative Writing is for high school seniors and transfer students who intend to enroll at Hope College in the fall of 2024.

Applying is valuable for all students interested in creative writing, since it gives faculty a chance to get to know you and your work before you arrive on campus and begin taking creative writing courses.

Apply for the DAA in Creative Writing by submitting:

  • The application form, including:
      • A short essay about your reading and writing
      • A sample of your creative writing (one piece or a collection of pieces that include fiction, poetry and/or creative nonfiction) — totaling no more than 10 typed pages
      • A letter of recommendation from a teacher or mentor who knows you as a student and/or as a writer

To apply for a Distinguished Artist Award in Creative Writing, you’ll also need to submit a completed application for admission to Hope College.

Applications for the Distinguished Artist Awards in Creative Writing must be received by midnight, February 18, 2024. Scholarship recipients will be notified in mid-March 2024.

Scholarship Requirements

To keep this scholarship, you’ll need to maintain a 2.6 GPA at Hope and declare a creative writing major or minor. This scholarship, in combination with other resources (such as scholarships, grants, Veterans Benefits or employer-provided tuition benefits), may not exceed your Cost of Attendance (as determined by the college) for any given award year.

If you lose your scholarship for any semester(s) due to such circumstances as a non-qualifying GPA, resources exceeding Cost of Attendance, a third semester of off-campus study or temporary enrollment at another institution, these semesters of eligibility are forfeited and not available for use at a later time. Should you earn your degree in less than eight semesters, you are no longer eligible to receive this award.
