Graduate School Admissions Tests
Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
GRE
The GRE is the “general” graduate school admissions test
required for admission to many university graduate programs. Information
on the structure of the exam and study resources is available on the
website www.gre.org. All computers in Hope College computer labs feature
a practice GRE program for student use in preparation for the computerized
version of the GRE (most students will need to take the computerized
GRE exam rather than the paper based exam). Study guides are available
for reference in the Career Library. Registration for the GRE can be
tricky through the official website. GRE testing centers recommend that
test takers contact a testing center directly to schedule a test time.
The closest area exam site, Prometric Testing Center, is located at 3910
Burton St. SE in Grand Rapids, MI. Contact the Prometric Testing Center
at (616) 957-0368 to schedule an exam or visit the GRE website to find
an alternate test site. PLEASE NOTE: GRE will restructure the exam beginning
in September of 2007. Students wishing to take the test after September
1, 2007 should be aware that new study guides and practice exams will
be available AFTER that date.
GMAT
The GMAT is a standardized test used by the majority of graduate management
programs to assess the qualifications of applicants. The assessment contains
nine timed sections with two written essays as part of the exam. Information
on the exam, including test locations, may be found at www.gmat.org. Study
guides are available for reference in the Career
Library.
LSAT
This half-day standardized test required by the American Bar Association
measures reading and verbal reasoning skills and is used to predict academic
performance in the first year of law school. Many law schools require
the assessment be taken in December, although others advise taking the
exam 15 months to a year prior to beginning law school. Study guides are
available for reference in the Career
Library and information on the exam, as well as test sites, may be
found at www.lsat.org.
MCAT
Scores for the MCAT are given in verbal reasoning, physical sciences,
a writing sample, and biological sciences. The MCAT is required by nearly
all medical schools and is used to test the applicant’s knowledge
of science concepts and principles that are prerequisites to the study
of medicine. View information on the MCAT at www.aamc.org. Study guides
are available for reference in the Career
Library.
