Practicing the Way

Practicing the Way is a discipleship resource designed to connect followers of Jesus to our Lord through biblical practices that have sanctified Christians for thousands of years.

The disciplines we will practice together are sabbath, scripture, solitude, prayer, fasting, community, service, witness and generosity.

Why do these “disciplines” matter?

These disciplines are tried-and-true ways to grow closer to Jesus and live a more purposeful life. Why find out the hard way when we can instead follow in the footsteps of believers who have come before us?

Which disciplines will we practice this semester?

This semester, we will be practicing the disciplines of solitude, prayer and community!

What do meetings look like?

We meet all-together as a group and break off into small groups called “triads” (separated by gender) during each meeting. Meetings last one hour, beginning with five–10 minutes of fellowship, followed by five–10 minutes of small-group discussion, 30 minutes of teaching, five–10 minutes of small-group discussion, and closing with creating an action plan to practice the current discipline with your friends.

What should I bring?

Bring your Bible, the current practice’s companion guide, a writing utensil and a friend! Links for the printable companion guides:

Do I have to come every week?

Short answer: no. However, the disciplines are taught in four-week intervals (i.e., a month for scripture, a month for fasting, etc.), so it is most beneficial to attend every week in order to gain a full understanding of the disciplines. If you have a scheduling conflict or something comes up, you can still gain a lot from attending just once!

When and where do y’all meet?

We meet in the Campus Ministries building (van Andel Huys der Hope) on Thursdays from 8–9 p.m. in the Gathering Room (room 103) and the Patterson Prayer Room (room 209).
