Coaches remain loyal to one of D-III's top programs
Flying Dutchmen Finish Third in Nation (3/22/08) Marcus Vanderheide led three Hope players above the 20-point plateau with a game-high 24 points as the Flying Dutchmen made amends for Friday's loss. "We had two great halves," explained Hope head coach Glenn Van Wieren. "Our team was very emotional today. I'm so happy for them, the seniors, the last game of their collegiate career ended in a win. These guys are friends for life because they have respect for each other, the joy and fun they have together." Vanderheide scored 15 of his 24 points in the first half as Hope commanded as much as a 15-point advantage in the first half. Long-distance shooting was the weapon of choice for both squads throughout the game. Hope's Derek VanSolkema knocked down 6-of-10 from beyond the arc as the Flying Dutchmen connected on 11-of-24 three-pointers. John Noonan, who shot 9-of-11 from the field in the first frame, made six of his seven tries from deep to lead Ursinus with a game-best tying 24 points. "Coming into today's game we were very disappointed in the outcome of yesterday's game," explained Hope's Tyler Wolfe. "We were all disappointed, we all felt bad. We just wanted to work hard today and play Hope Basketball." Ursinus opened up an early 8-4 lead and maintained a two-point edge through the first five minutes of the half. Hope responded with a 16-2 run over the next five minutes to move out to a 26-14 lead with 10:30 to go in the half. Vanderheide and VanSolkema kept the pedal down as the Flying Dutchmen moved out to a 15-point lead with 3:40 to play in the half. Ursinus mounted a run of its own, outscoring Hope 11-0 over the next 2:25 to pull to within four at 46-42 with 1:15 to go. Hope managed a few extra buckets to stretch its lead to 50-42 going into the half. Hope opened the second half with a 26-12 run to move out to a 76-54 advantage with 12:41 to play. Ursinus again caught itself and slowly worked back to within 12 points on several occasions including with 3:46 to play, but the Bears couldn't draw any closer with both teams shooting 50-percent from the field in the latter frame. Vanderheide added eight rebounds and five assists to his 24-point effort. VanSolkema finished with 22 points and eight helpers, and Tyler Wolfe added another 22-point marker accompanied by eight rebounds. Jesse Reimink dropped in 18 points to go with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Flying Bow to Eventual National Champion Washington (3/21/08) “I thought that was quite a Division III game,” explained Wash-U head coach Mark Edwards. “I thought both teams were alike, but I felt the difference really came down to experience. I think coming here last year helped us, not only on the resolve of wanting to win, but also how to win.” Ruths scored 19 of his game-high 30 points in the second half as the Bears shot 65.4-percent in the second half in knocking off the current top-rated Flying Dutchmen (rating according to D3hoops.com). Ruths made 11-of-15 shots from the field and another 8-of-9 from the charity stripe to go with six rebounds. Aaron Thompson helped the Bears open up the game in the second half with a 13-point run. At the 15:02 mark, Thompson dropped in a lay-up to give Wash-U a 46-42 lead. Hope came back to tie the score with lay-ups on its next two possessions, but Thompson responded with a three-pointer to give the Bears the lead for good at 49-46 with 13:19 on the clock. He went on to hit two more three pointers and a jumper to push the Bears out to a six-point edge at 57-51 with 11:38 to play. Hope continued to battle as it worked its disadvantage down to two points, but an 11-3 Bear run highlighted by seven points from Danny O’Boyle catapulted Washington U. to a 68-58 lead with 7:10 to play. Hot shooting kept the Bears a leg-up as Hope fought to get back into the contest. Wash-U’s lead increased to as much as 17 points with 1:47 to play. For the game, Washington U. shot at a 55.8-percent clip (29-of-52), connecting on 8-of-19 from beyond the arc. Hope shot 40-percent from the field and cropped in 11 makes in 26 tries from deep. Derek VanSolkema led the Flying Dutchmen with 19 points including a 5-for-11 showing three-point range. Jesse Reimink added 15 points, five rebounds and six assists, and Marcus Vanderheide notched 100 tallies. Zach Osburn pulled down a game-best nine rebounds. “I thought we played hard. I thought Washington University played hard,” explained Hope head coach Glenn Van Wieren. “They had exceptional shooting.”
Flying Dutchmen Headed to NCAA Final Four (3/15/08) The Flying Dutchmen defeated Wheaton 71-63 Saturday in the sectional championship game, punching their ticket for a trip to Salem, Va. where next Friday they'll play Washington, Mo. in a semi-final game. Rounding out the final four teams is defending national champion Amherst, Mass. and Ursinus, Pa. Playing before another sellout crowd at DeVos Fieldhouse, the Flying Dutchmen were especially effective shooting from the outside. All five starters scored in double figures and each had at least two three-pointers. Hope made 15-of-24 three pointers, including 10-for-13 in the second half. Marcus Vanderheide led Hope with 23 points followed by Derek Van Solkema 15, Jesse Reimink 14, Ryan Klein 13 and Tyler Wolfe 12.

Dutchmen Defeat Rival Calvin to Claim Title (3/1/08) The championship advances Hope to the NCAA tournament for the 19th time in school history. The Flying Dutchmen were the top-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region entering the weekend and stand a good chance of hosting a tournament game although that won't be known until Monday. Midway through the first half the visiting Knights had a 13-point lead, 27-14, quieting the largely partisan Hope throng. Hope would outscore Calvin 17-6 over the next three minutes to trim the deficit to two points, 33-31. Junior Zach Osburn's putback in the closing seconds of the half gave Hope a 38-37 lead at intermission. The teams were tied twice in the early minutes of the second half before Hope went on an eight-point run to take command, 50-42. The Flying Dutchmen would never look back, leading by as many as 20 points. Hope had four players score in double figures led by senior Tyler Wolfe with 25 points. Ryan Klein added 19 points while Jesse Reimink and Marcus Vanderheide each tallied 10.
Flying Dutchmen Advance to MIAA Tournament Finals (2/29/08) The Flying Dutchmen needed a strong second half to gain their victory. Adrian dominated most of the first half save a successful buzzer-beating halfcourt basket by Derek VanSolkema which put Hope ahead 33-32. Senior Tyler Wolfe propelled the Flying Dutchmen in the second half with four key three-point baskets. Senior Marcus Vanderheide led the team with 24 points, including 17 in the second half. Wolfe finished with 18 points while Van Solkema added 13 and Jesse Reimink 10.
Flying Dutchmen Advance to Playoff Semis (2/27/08) Hope defeated Alma by 26 and 39 points in their two regular season contests. The Scots hung around with the nationally ranked Dutchmen alot longer this time around utilizing a slowdown offense while capitalizing on clutch three-point baskets.With six minutes left in the game Hope's lead was just nine points, 52-43. Hope outscored Alma 23-8 the rest of the way to improve to 22-3 on the season. Senior Marcus Vanderheide posted his fifth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Derek Van Solkema added 16 points. Hope had only five turnovers in the game, a tournament record. The previous mark was six turnovers by Adrian in a 1992 loss to Kalamazoo.
Flying Dutchmen Clinch Outright MIAA Title (2/23/08) Coach Glenn Van Wieren's Dutchmen finish atop the MIAA standings with a 13-1 record and end the regular season with a 21-3 mark. It is Hope's second consecutive outright MIAA title and the third in five years. It means Hope will have the home court advantage throughout the conference tournament beginning Wednesday when the Flying Dutchmen host Alma. The Flying Dutchmen never trailed, jumping off to a 7-0 lead. Hope's lead was 31-21 at halftime. Marcus Vanderheide led the Dutchmen with 18 points while Jesse Reimink and Tyler Wolfe each scored 11.
Flying Dutchmen Clinch Share of MIAA Title; Much to the delight of the throng of 3,603 fans, Hope defeated Calvin for the second time this season. Hope also takes a two-game advantage in the alltime series between the two storied rivals. The Flying Dutchmen left little doubt as to the ultimate outcome of this game. Making their first six shots, including four three-pointers, the Flying Dutchmen raced to a 16-6 lead just four minutes into the game. Junior Jesse Reimink scored 11 of those 16. Hope held a 50-22 lead at halftime. Calvin outscored Hope by 11 points in the second half, but it was too little, too late. Reimink scored a career-high 25 points while Tyler Wolfe and Marcus Vanderheide each added 13 points. Reimink and Vanderheide each had nine rebounds while Derek VanSolkema was credited with seven assists.
Flying Dutchmen Inch Closer to Title (2/16/08) Coach Glenn Van Wieren put an all-senior starting lineup on the floor in tribute to his senior class. The quintet of Ryan Klein, Tyler Wolfe, Scott Glaser, Derek Van Solkema and Don Holt responded by building a quick 16-6 lead. In the end 14 players scored a point and grabbed a rebound. Marcus Vanderheide led the Dutchmen with 13 points while Tyler Wolfe added 11 and Will Bowser scored 10. Hope made 13 three-pointers and finished with 23 assists on 34 baskets.
Flying Dutchmen Maintain Lead in MIAA Race (2/13/08) Coach Glenn Van Wieren's Dutchmen improved to 18-3 on the season and to 10-1 in the MIAA. The Flying Dutchmen have a one-game lead on Albion (9-2) which also posted a victory Wednesday edging Calvin 56-55. The loss drops Calvin into third place two games behind Hope. Hope jumped out to a 12-0 lead and built it to a 16 point advantage at halftime, 37-21. Hope scored 25 points off Adrian turnovers in the first half as the Bulldogs turned the ball over 15 times. Three Hope players were already at double figures by halftime -- Tyler Wolfe 12, Derek Van Solkema 11 and Marcus Vanderheide 10. The Bulldogs cut the Hope lead to five points, 45-40, seven minutes into the second half. Hope went on a 17-2 run over the next eight minutes to take command, 62-42. Ryan Klein led the Dutchmen with 17 points, making 8-of-10 shots while Tyler Wolfe and Marcus Vanderheide each had 14 and Derek VanSolkema scored 13. Adrian ended with 25 turnovers as Hope was credited with 14 steals. The Flying Dutchmen scored 36 points off Adrian turnovers.
Derek Van Solkema Honored by MIAA (2/11/08) Flying Dutchmen Maintain MIAA Lead (2/9/08) Four starters scored in double figures for the Flying Dutchmen who were playing their second game in less than 48 hours. Senior Derek Van Solkema scored 20 points for the second consecutive game, making five three-point baskets. Senior Tyler Wolfe followed with 19 points while junior Jesse Reimink added 15. Senior Marcus Vanderheide posted his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds, including 11 off the defensive board. Tyler Wolfe was also credited with six assists while Vanderheide had four steals.
Flying Dutchmen Back on Winning Track (2/7/08) Hope effectively blended its inside and outside game. Senior Derek VanSolkema scored a game-high 20 points behind six three-point baskets while junior Jesse Reimink recorded his first collegiate double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Tyler Wolfe also scored 15 points and was credited with seven assists.
Flying Dutchmen Suffer First MIAA Loss (2/2/08) The fourth-ranked Flying Dutchmen had their poorest shooting effort of the season, finishing at 32%, including just 3-for-21 from three-point range. Hope also lost the battle of the boards as Albion held a 41-23 rebound advantage, including a 27-7 edge in the first half. The teams were tied 52-52 with 2:18 to play. Hope would not score again while Albion's final four points came from free throws. Derek Van Solkema led the Dutchmen with 18 points while Jesse Reimink added 12 and Marcus Vanderheide tallied 11.
Outside Accuracy Keys Dutchmen Victory (1/30/08) The Flying Dutchmen made 15 three-point baskets tying a DeVos Fieldhouse record. The treys came on just 25 attempts. Senior Tyler Wolfe and freshman Ty Tanis each made five three-pointers. Ten of the treys came in the first half as the Flying Dutchmen pulled to a 47-26 lead. Wolfe led the team in scoring with 19 points followed by Tanis with 15, Marcus Vanderheide 11 and Jesse Reimink 10. VanderHeide was credited with a seasonbest eight assists.
MIAA Coaches Honor Marcus Vanderheide (1/28/08) box score The Flying Dutchmen won the 167th meeting of The Rivalry game defeating Calvin 79-76 on the Knights' court before a capacity crowd and national television audience. Coach Glenn Van Wieren's Dutchmen improved to 6-0 in the MIAA and with a seven-game winning streak are 14-2 overall. Hope now leads the alltime series with Calvin 84-83. The score was tied 10 times and the teams traded the lead 15 times before Hope took the lead for good on Tyler Wolfe's layup 76-74 with 2:36 left to play. Seniors Marcus Vanderheide and Tyler Wolfe recorded career-high scoring performances with 30 and 26 points respectively. Vanderheide notched his third double-double of the season by grabbing 13 rebounds.
Flying Dutchmen Maintain MIAA Lead (1/23/08) Hope started fast leading 11-2 just three minutes into the game. Hope's lead was 47-31 at halftime and the biggest spread was 32 points, 77-45. The Flying Dutchmen protected the basketball committing only five turnovers in the game. Four players scored in double figures led by senior Marcus Vanderheide with 17 points. Next was Derek Van Solkema with 14 points followed by Jesse Reimink 11 and Ryan Klein 10.
Flying Dutchmen Need Late Surge to Gain Win (1/19/08) Hope let a 12-point lead slip away late in the second half as Adrian gained a two-point lead, 67-65, with 2:19 remaining. Tyler Wolfe's three-point basket put Hope back in the lead 68-67 at 2:04. Six consecutive free throws down the stretch kept Hope on top. Marcus Vanderheide posted his third career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ryan Klein scored a career-high 23 points, making 8-of-11 shots. Tyler Wolfe finished with 10 points. Adrian scored six more baskets than Hope, but the Flying Dutchmen were 28-of-36 on free throws compared to Adrian 11-of-15.
Flying Dutchmen Remain Unbeaten in MIAA (1/16/08) Senior Marcus Vanderheide led Hope with 16 points while Derek Van Solkema added 13, Tyler Wolfe 12 and Jesse Reimink 11. The Flying Dutchmen shot 53%, made a season-best 21-for-25 on free throws and held a 42-28 rebound advantage. Hope improved to 11-2 on the season and with a 3-0 mark against MIAA opponents is tied for first place with Calvin in the conference standings.
Flying Dutchmen Record Milestone Win (1/12/08) Glenn Van Wieren becomes just the sixth coach in NCAA Division III men's basketball history to achieve 600 victories. His 31-year record is 600-201. His winning percentage (.749) is the best in this elite coaching group. He also has reached 600 victories faster than any other Division III coach (801st game). The previous mark was by Glenn Robinson of Franklin & Marshall who won number 600 in his 821st game. Hope never trailed in the game and led by 15 points at halftime (44-29), but it wasn't until the final two minutes of the game that the outcome was assured. Olivet, behind 63% shooting, closed the gap to three points, 74-71, with 3:04 remaining. Hope scored the game's final six points. Senior Marcus Vanderheide led Hope with 18 points while Tyler Wolfe added 17, including 15 in the first half, and Derek Van Solkema talled 10. Game scoring honors went to Olivet's Brandon McClary with 19 points. The Comets slipped to 0-2 in the MIAA and to 4-8 overall.
The Road to 600
Defense Keys Hope Basketball Win (1/9/08) In each case, the opponents' point total was the fewest allowed by Hope this season. Coach Brian Morehouse's Flying Dutch improved to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA while coach Glenn Van Wieren's Flying Dutchmen moved to 9-2 on the season. It was also the 599th victory coached by Van Wieren during his 31 seasons at the helm of the the Flying Dutchmen. Hope 64, Albion 49: Hope led only 18-16 at halftime and trailed 29-27 six minutes into the second half. Back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Ty Tanis put Hope back in the lead. Senior Derek Van Solkema followed with an eight-point run and Hope never looked back. The Flying Dutchmen limited Albion to 23% percent shooting. Tyler Wolfe led Hope in scoring with 16 points while Van Solkema had 13 and Ryan Klein added 10. Hope shot 62% from the floor in the second half after shooting 24% in the first half. Hope 56, Calvin 39: The Flying Dutch broke a 7-7 tie four minutes into the game with a nine-point run. Hope led 31-17 at halftime. The Flying Dutch limited Calvin to only 23% shooting. Freshman Carrie Snickers posted her first collegiate double scoring 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Flying Dutchmen Win Russ DeVette Classic (12/29/07) The game marked the end of the non-conference portion of Hope's season. The Flying Dutchmen will enter MIAA conference play next month with an 8-2 record. Hope played argubably one of the nation's most challenging pre-league schedules with seven of their 10 opponents being ranked nationally in either pre-season or current NCAA and NAIA polls. Mount Vernon came into Saturday's DeVette title game with a 10-0 mark. Hope won the DeVette Classic for the third straight year and for the 13th time in its 19-year history. A poignant moment occurred during the post-game when coach Russ DeVette stepped on to the court to present the trophy to the Flying Dutchmen. Coach DeVette suffered a mild stroke just three weeks ago and was recently released from the hospital. Senior Ryan Klein was honored as the tournament's most valuable player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by senior teammate Derek Van Solkema. Friday - Hope 97, Grace Bible 48 -- Two minutes into the game, the Flying Dutchmen trailed 3-2. Hope went on a 22-point run over the next nine minutes to gain a 24-3 advantage. Hope led 50-18 at the intermission break. Hope's final 60.6% (40/66) field goal average was a season-best and DeVos Fieldhouse record. Fourteen of Hope's 15 players got into the scorebook led by Derek Van Solkema who scored 15 points in 16 minutes of play. Others in double figures were Ryan Klein 13, Will Bowser 11 and Cody Canan 10. Hope committed only nine turnovers and finished with 16 steals.Saturday - Hope 96, Mt. Vernon Nazarene 77 - Entering Saturday's championship game senior Ryan Klein's career-high game was 14 points. He single-handedly set the tone in the first half scoring 15 points on perfect 6-for-6 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. Hope led 52-44 at halftime. With seven minutes left in the game, Hope's lead was 79-71. The Flying Dutchmen scored the next 10 points to grow the lead to 89-71 with 4:20 remaining. Klein ended with 20 points while Marcus Vanderheide had 17, Jesse Remink 15 and Derek VanSolkema 12. Reimink also had nine rebounds and seven steals. Flying Dutchmen Split Florida GamesRDV Sportsplex Tournament website Hope 75, Roanoke 62 Elmhurst 74, Hope 71 The Flying Dutchmen split their games this week at the RDV Sportsplex D3 Tournament in Orlando, Fla. After defeating Roanoke, Va. 75-62 on Tuesday, coach Glenn Van Wieren's Dutchmen bowed to Elmhurst, Ill. 74-71 on Wednesday. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak and puts the Dutchmen at 6-2 heading into their annual Russ DeVette Holiday Classic next week (Dec. 28-29). Wednesday's game was a showdown of nationally ranked teams, #8 Hope and #23 Elmhurst. It was a game of streaks that came down to the final shot. Hope dominated the game early-on leading by as many as 16 points. Elmhurst cut the lead to a point at halftime with Hope leading 38-37. The lead changed hands several times in the second half. The Flying Dutchmen tied the score at 71-71 on a pair of free throws by Marcus Vanderheide with 13 seconds remaining. Elmhurst went for the final shot with Ryan Burks launching a desparation three-pointer in the last second. He was fouled on that errant attempt and went to the free throw line for three attempts. He was successful on all three to give the Bluejays the win. Vanderheide, who was voted to the all-tournament team, ended with 18 points while Jesse Reimink added 11 and Tyler Wolfe 10.
Dutchmen Extend Winning Streak to Six (12/18/07) The victory culminated a triplheader involving six NCAA Division III teams. In Tuesday's other games, Defiance, Ohio upset nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh 53-46 while Elmhurst, Ill. topped Tri-State, Ind. 75-65. The tournament continues Wednesday with Hope (6-1) meeting Elmhurst (5-1) at 3 p.m. followed by Defiance (6-3) vs. Roanoke (4-2) and then Tri-State (2-5) vs. UW-Oshkosh (7-2). Both Hope and Roanoke featured full-court pressure for the entire 40 minutes of play. It resulted in an active referee's whistle with the teams being called for 49 personal fouls. It sent the players to the free throw line 60 times. Early foul trouble among Hope's starters caused coach Glenn Van Wieren to go to his bench for extended periods. The bench accounted for nearly half of Hope's points (34) and more than half of the rebounds (25 of 45). Sharing scoring honors were senior Ryan Klein and freshman Will Bowser with 11 points apiece while Tyler Wolfe added 10. Flying Dutchmen Escape Snow for Florida Games (12/16/07)RDV Sportsplex Tournament website The Flying Dutchmen are in Florida preparing for the RDV Sportsplex D3 Tournament in Orlando on Tuesday and Wednesday. Coach Glenn Van Wieren's Dutchmen will bring a five-game winning streak into their Tuesday night game against first-time opponent Roanoke, Va. (4-1). Tipoff will be 9 p.m. ET. The WHTC broadcast of the game will be streamed on the internet. The team will be back in action on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. matinee game against Elmhurst, Ill. (4-1). Prior to Wednesday's game the Hope Alumni Association will host a reception for alumni and friends at the RDV Sportsplex.
Flying Dutchmen Extend Win Streak (12/7/07) Hope will be meeting Aquinas for the second time this season in Saturday's 3 p.m.championship game at DeVos Fieldhouse. It will be preceded by the consolation game between Marygrove and Trinity International at 1 p.m. The Saints, who are unbeaten in 10 games, had Hope its only loss in overtime two weeks ago. Five players scored in double figures for the Flying Dutcghmen led by junior Jesse Reimink who scored 19 points behind some dazzling shooting. He was 8-for-11 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 on three-pointers. Freshman Ty Tanis followed with 12 points, all on three-pointers. Next were Marcus Vanderheide and Derek VanSolkema with 11 points apiece while Tyler Wolfe added 10. Hope made 12 three-point baskets, was credited with 23 steals and held a 47-31 rebound advantage.
MIAA Coaches Honor Hope Player (12/3/07) The 6-7 Vanderheide keyed a pair of Hope victories in the MIAA/CCIW Challenge this past weekend. In an 83-53 victory over Wheaton he scored 11 points and was credited with four assists, four rebounds and four steals. He followed with a 19-point and eight-rebound performance in an 85-75 victory over Carthage. In the games he shot 9-for-18 and was 11-for-14 on free throws. He grabbed 12 rebounds, had eight assists and five steals.
Flying Dutchmen Sweep MIAA/CCIW Challenge (12/1/07) On Saturday Hope led 43-27 at halftime and by as many 21 points with three minutes to play. Four Hope players scored in double figures led by Marcus Vanderheide with 19, followed by Derek Van Solkema 15, Ryan Klein 12 and Jesse Reimink 10. The Flying Dutchmen will bring a 3-1 record into their home debut next weekend when they host the Holland Sentinel Community Tournament.
Fast Start Propels Dutchmen to Big Victory (11/30/07) Five Hope players scored in double figures led by Tyler Wolfe's 17 points. Derek Van Solkema was next with 15 points followed by Ryan Klein 14, Marcus Vanderheide 11 and Ryan Tanis 10.
Flying Dutchmen Even Season Record with Win (11/24/07) Aquinas, which defeated Hope in overtime on Friday, topped Calvin in double overtime in Saturday's championship game, 90-88. The Flying Dutchmen took control of the game from the start and gained a 47-32 halftime lead. They built the lead to as many as 25 points in the second half. Sharing scoring honors for the Dutchmen were Jessie Reimink and Derek Van Solkema with 12 points apiece while Marcus Vanderheide and Will Bowser each had 10. Vanderheide and Reimink each had eight rebounds. Van Solkema was credited with five assists and three steals. Vanderheide was named to the all-tournament team for the second consecutive year. Hope was credited with 15 steals and the team was charged with just 12 turnovers in the game. Freshman Ty Tanis was 3-for-4 on three-pointers as the Flying Dutchmen made eight from long range.
Flying Dutchmen Drop Season Opener in OT (11/23/07) The loss puts coach Glenn Van Wieren's two-time defending champion Flying Dutchmen in the consolation game of the 12th annual tournament featuring west Michigan's top small college basketball programs. Hope will play host Cornerstone at 6 p.m. Saturday. In Friday's other game, Calvin defeated Cornerstone 82-77. It was a disappointing season opener for the Flying Dutchmen who led by as many as 11 points in the closing minutes of the second half. A flurry of three-point baskets put the undefeated Saints (5-0) back into the game, including a "prayer" from the corner by the Saints' Jeff Wierzbicki with one second remaining in regulation. Aquinas scored the first eight points in the overtime period and never looked back. Marcus Vanderheide had a double-double for the Flying Dutchmen with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Tyler Wolfe added 13 points while Derek Van Solkema tallied 10. Hope shot just 38% for the game, including 6-for-26 from three-point range.

2007-08 Pre-Season Outlook (10/31/07) Coach Glenn Van Wieren, who begins his 31st year at the helm of the Flying Dutchmen, will build the team around nine returning letterwinners, including five seniors. He has also selected four freshmen to be on the varsity squad. The Flying Dutchmen in 06-07 won a record 33rd MIAA crown and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II championships. The MIAA crown was the 16th under coach Van Wieren. The Flying Dutchmen set an MIAA record for margin-of-victory (24 points per game) en route to posting an overall 26-5 record and 13-1 mark in the MIAA. Co-captains are senior forward Ryan Klein of Burr Ridge, Ill. (Timothy Christian HS), junior forward Jesse Reimink of Hudsonville, Mich. (Hudsonville HS), and senior forward Marcus Vanderheide of Grandville, Mich. (Calvin Christian HS). Senior guard Derek Van Solkema of Cutlerville, Mich. (Grand Rapids South Christian HS) earned All-MIAA first team honors last year while Vanderheide received second team recognition. Van Solkema averaged 11.2 points per game and topped the MIAA in steals. Other senior players are forward Scott Glaser of Ann Arbor, Mich. (Lenawee Christian HS), center Dan Holt of Spring Lake, Mich. (Spring Lake HS), and guard Tyler Wolfe of Cedar Springs, Mich. (Cedar Springs HS). Klein and Reimink ranked one-two in the MIAA in field goal shooting at .613 abd .604 respectively. Reimink also topped the conference in three-point shooting (.767) while Van Solkema was second (.524). Other returning letterwinners are sophomore forward Steven Kratz of Ludington, Mich. (Ludington HS) and junior forward Zach Osburn of Holland, Mich. (West Ottawa HS). New to the varsity program are junior guard Brandon Bosch of Hudsonville, Mich. (Hudsonville HS), freshman forward Will Bowser of Midland, Mich. (Dow HS), junior forward Cody Canan of Grandville, Mich. (Calvin Christian HS), freshman guard Kelvin Carter of Midland, Mich. (Midland HS), freshman forward Douglas Sharples of Washington, Mich. (Romeo HS), and freshman guard Ty Tanis of Jenison, Mich. (Jenison HS). Five tournament weekends await the Flying Dutchmen before they launch conference play in January. The season begins with the Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Cornerstone University on Thanksgiving Weekend. The team’s home opener will be the Holland Sentinel Community Tournament on Dec. 7-8. Other tournaments will include the MIAA/CCIW Challenged hosted by Calvin (Nov.30-Dec. 1), the RDV Sportsplex Tournament in Orlando, Fla. (Dec. 18-19), and the home Russ DeVette Holiday Classic (Dec. 28-29). The team will be marking their third season at the college’s DeVos Fieldhouse where they’ve topped all NCAA Division III teams in home attendance and posted a 31-2 record. The team’s 10th victory of the season will be the sixth under Van Wieren who ranks sixth among active NCAA Division III coaches with a 590-199 record.

ESPN Says Hope-Calvin Rivalry Among the Best
An ESPN crew covered the Calvin at Hope game in 2005. ESPN also conducted an on-line "Fan Poll" where the Hope-Calvin rivalry received resounding support as America's best with more than 80% of the voters casting their ballot for the orange & blue/maroon & gold.
