Three Hope Players Named All-MIAA (11/8/07)
Season Over as Flying Dutch Bow (10/30/07) Trailing 3-0 at intermission, the Flying Dutch struck first in the second half off senior Julia Fischer's goal in the 49th minute. Calvin responded quickly with a pair of goals in the next 88 seconds to seal the verdict. Calvin out-shot Hope 18-11. Each team had six corner kicks. Goalkeeper Kelsey Bos was credited with five saves.
Flying Dutch Win MIAA Tournament Opener (10/27/07)
Flying Dutch Score Shutout Victory (10/19/07) Hope, which is finished playing league games, can finish no worse than fourth when the regular season ends next week. Calvin tops the MIAA standings at 6-0-0 followed by Albion 5-1-1, Hope 5-2-1 and 4-1-1. The first round of the conference tournament is next Saturday. Five different players scored a goal for the Dutch who outshot Adrian 32-9. Credited with goals were Sarah Cochrane, Allison Van Beek, Ellie Tresslar, Katie Lovinger and Bethany Kicz. Cochrane and Sonya Masghati each had an assist. Goalkeepers Kesley Bos and Kirsten Bonzelaar combined for the shutout. Loss Drops Flying Dutch in MIAA Standings (10/16/07)Box Score / MIAA Standings The Flying Dutch dropped into fourth place in the MIAA standings after bowing to visiting Albion 3-1 on Tuesday. Coach Leigh Sears' Flying Dutch dropped to 4-2-1 in the MIAA and 8-7-1 overall in suffering their first loss in the last five games. The Flying Dutch scored first when Sarah Cochrane collected her sixth goal of the season with a header off the corner kick of Ellie Tresslar. Albion tied the the score when a corner kick when off a Hope player into the net. Albion gained a 2-1 halftime lead on Lauren Baker's unassisted goal in the final minute of the first half. The third goal by Liz Wolf came in the 75th minute. Hope dominated the play if not the score with a 22-10 advantage in shots and 13-3 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Kelly Schaefer was credited with three saves.

Flying Dutch Win Overtime Thriller (10/9/07) Coach Leigh Sears' Dutch improved to 4-1 in the MIAA standings with their third straight victory and the fifth over the last six games. Hope stands 8-6 overall. Senior Sarah Cochrane scored her 32nd career goal in the 99th minute stealing an Olivet restart in the box. Hope ended with a 29-10 advantage in shots and 11-0 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Kelly Schaefer was credited with her fourth shutout of the season.

Six Players Score a Goal in Dutch Victory (10/2/07) The Flying Dutch led 5-0 at intermission and finished the game with a 44-4 advantage in shots and 14-0 edge in corner kicks. Scoring goals were Katie Lovinger, Sarah Cochrane, Danielle Schurr, Julia Fischer, Bethany Kicz, and Courtney Cook. Credited with assists were Kristen Schwenk, Cassie Thomas, Erin Eddy, Sarah Sosolik, and Katie Lovinger.

Flying Dutch Even Season Record (9/15/07) The teams exchanged goals in the first half, Hope scoring on an ONU own-goal off a corner kick and the Polar Bears answering with only 19 seconds until intermission. The Flying Dutch scored two unanswered goals in the second half. Sarah Sosolik scored unassisted in the 68th minute and Allison Van Beek clinched the outcome with a goal in the 82nd minute off an assist from Ellie Tresslar. Ohio Northern outshot Hope 18-10. Hope goalkeeper Kelly Schaefer was credited with nine saves. Flying Dutch Bow at Aquinas (9/12/07)Box Score The Flying Dutch scored first but then couldn't respond to three unanswered goals by Aquinas in bowing to the Saints 3-1 on Wednesday. The defeat puts the Flying Dutch at 2-3 on the season. Senior Sarah Cochrane scored her 29th career goal, assisted by Allison VanBeek, in the 15th minute of the game. Aquinas waited until the 64th minute to tie the score and then added two more goals over a five minute period to remain undefeated on the season (6-0). Aquinas outshot Hope 27-15. Goalkeeper Kelly Schaefer was credited with 12 saves. Both Hope Teams Mark Home Field Wins (9/8/07) Box Score Community Day Photo Highlights Hope's soccer teams treated large Community Day crowds to victories Saturday. The Flying Dutch defeated Saint Mary's 3-1 while the Flying Dutchmen edged North Park, Ill. 1-0 in overtime. Each Hope team stands 2-2 on the young season. The Flying Dutch hosted their MIAA rival for a non-league game. Saint Mary's scored first, but Hope came back with three unanswered goals. Scoring were Julia Fischer, Sonya Masghati and Ellie Tresslar. Hope held a 13-7 edge in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Kelly Schaefer had seven saves. The Flying Dutchmen scored in the 104th minutes with sophomore Ausable Schwiebert coming off the bench to get the game-winner. Hope has now played four consecutive games in which the final score was 1-0. The game was part of the Bergsma Memorial Tournament in which Hope and Calvin exchange opponents. Wheaton won the tournament with a pair of 1-0 wins over the Dutchmen and Calvin. Hope held a 10-5 shot advantage over the nationally ranked North Park team. Goalkeeper Mike Amerman recorded the shutout with four saves.
Flying Dutch Post Season's First Win (9/5/07) Hope held a 21-3 advantage in shots on goal as keepers Kelly Schaefer and Kelsey Bos combined for the shutout. Hope scored twice in the first half behind goals from Sarah Cochrane and Kristen Schwenk. In the second half Julia Fischer scored on a penalty kick. Hope makes its home debut Saturday entertaining the Belles of Saint Mary's in the MIAA opener for both teams.
Flying Dutch Suffer Season-Opening Losses (9/1/07)
The Flying Dutch have won the MIAA championship three of the last four seasons. A year ago the Dutch finished second in the conference standings behind rival Calvin. A toughened non-league schedule left the team with a 9-8-2 overall record. Coach Leigh Sears begins her seventh season at the helm of the Flying Dutch. She will build this year’s team around 16 returning letterwinners. The roster of 24 players includes 10 freshmen, threesophomores, seven juniors and four seniors. Three returning players received All-MIAA honors in 2006 – junior midfielder Allison VanBeek of Libertyville, Ill. (Libertyville HS), senior forward Sarah Cochrane of Watertown, Wisc. (Watertown HS), and junior defender Allen Molenaar of Portage, Mich. (Portage Central HS). Van Beek and Cochrane ranked among the MIAA’s leading scorers with seven and six goals respectively. Senior Ellie Tresslar of Bloomington, Ind. (Bloomington HS) received All-MIAA honors in 2004 and 2005. Other returning letterwinners include sophomore Brenna Boat of Pella, Iowa (Pella HS), sophomore Erin Eddy of Walled Lake, Mich. (Walled Lake Central HS), senior Julia Fischer of Laingsburg, Mich. (Laingsburg HS), sophomore Kirsten Kaufmann of Clio, Mich. (Flint Powers HS), junior Suzi Knowles of North Fork, Calif. (Yosemite HS), junior Sonya Masghati of Naperville, Ill. (Naperville Central HS), junior Kelly Schaefer of Fenton, Mich. (Linden HS), senior Danielle Schurr of Richland, Mich. (Gull Lake HS), junior Sarah Sosolik of Oswego, Ill. (Oswego HS), junior Cassie Thomas of Glen Gardner, N.J. (Voorhees HS), sophomore Emily Wade of Bloomfield Hills (Seaholm HS), and sophomore Kristi Zetterholm of West Bloomfield, Mich. (West Bloomfield HS). Players receiving 2006 team honors include Allison VanBeek, most valuable player; Sarah Cochrane, most valuable offensive player; Ellen Molenaar, most valuable defensive player; Julie Kofron, rookie of the year; Kristi Zetterholm, most improved player and Kelly Schaefer and Brenna Boat, most inspirational players. The schedule will be comprised of nine non-league and eight conference games leading up to the MIAA tournament at the end of October. |
